Noboribetsu, Hokkaido’s most famous onsen (hot spring) town, is abundant in various kinds of volcanic water; each with its own therapeutic chemical qualities. The springs in the area collectively produce a whopping 10,000 tons of water daily. Noboribetsu is easily accessible from Sapporo and Hakodate and pairs relaxing natural hot baths with beautiful landscapes like the dramatic Jigokudani (“Hell Valley”) pumping steam into the air, and nearby Lake Oyunuma. Its closeness to other famous spots makes it the perfect place for a day trip, but you can also stay in one of the many hotels and ryokan (traditional inns) in the area.
