OVERVIEW

Get in a touch with the Ainu spirituality through traditional Ainu craft experience.

The Ainu people are an East Asian ethnic group, who have lived in harmony with nature in Hokkaido, Sakhalin, Tohoku and the Kuril Islands. They were actively involved in exchanges with neighboring peoples in northeast Asia, and have developed a variety of cultures, such as language, beliefs, the food culture and crafts.

To deepen our understanding, we also visit “Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park” which includes a Japan’s northernmost national museum. It was established in 2020 in Shiraoi town with the aim of the dissemination of the Ainu culture to people all over the world. In this town, a large patchwork quilt of traditional Ainu patterns is displayed, aiming to serve as a symbol of multicultural coexistence.
