OVERVIEW

In Ishikari City, the remains of the Jomon Period, Japan’s prehistoric era of about 5,000 years ago, can still be seen today. Salmon bones excavated along with ancient pottery and stone tools from fireplace sites tell us that the culture of eating salmon was already established in those early days. To survive harsh winters, salmon was also an important food source for the Ainu people who lived originally in this area.  This is why in the Ainu language salmon was called “Kamui Chebu,” meaning “Divine Fish.” Our tour is full of history and culture related to salmon in the Ishikari region, where we’ll cycle on roads along the Toyohira River and Ishikari Bay where salmon have been swimming upstream to spawn since ancient times.
