Cultural dance by the Ainu
OVERVIEW
People of Ainu have been living in northern Japan long before the Japanese people ruled Hokkaido. The National Ainu Museum and Park, UPOPOI opened in July 2020, which led the history and culture of the Ainu to gain attention once again. Out of the 47 prefectures in Japan, Hokkaido is one of the prefecture most closely related to Ainu. Many of Hokkaido’s geographical names are originated from Ainu words.
In this tour, we will first learn and experience the history, culture and tradition of the Ainu at UPOPOI. After lunch, we will hike Kamui Nupuri, the Mountain of God with a professional hiking guide and feel the nature of the mountain, just like how the Ainu did.
ITINERARY
08:30AM
Meet an English Speaking Guide at Sapporo Station. We will board a
chartered coach and head on to Noboribetsu City.
10:30AM
We will make a stop at the National Ainu Museum and Park UPOPOI.
We will first learn about the lives of the Ainu, the aborigines of Hokkaido.
12:00PM
For lunch, we will enjoy a delicious plate at a local restaurant nearby.
14:00PM
In the afternoon, we will go on a hike on Kamui Nupuri, the mountain
named as the Mountain as God by the Ainu. As we climb up the mountain, we will
learn from the local hiking guide about why this mountain was named Mountain of
God by the Ainu.
18:00PM
After a good hike, we board the chartered coach and arrive back at
Sapporo.
LUNCH
Our lunch will be a delicious dish using Shiraoi Beef. “Shiraoi” is he name of the town
UPOPOI is located in. The Shiraoi Beef is a famous Japanese Black Beef Brand in Japan,
and Shiraoi Town is the first area in Hokkaido to breed Japanese Black Beef.
