Bihoro Town is close to Memanbetsu Airport, the gateway to Okhotsk, and provides easy access to Akan-Mashu National Park. The nearby Bihoro Pass offers an expansive view stretching over Lake Kussharo, Japan’s largest caldera lake, that also takes in the majestic plumes of Mt. Io, the Shiretoko Mountain Range, and the ever-changing shapes of the clouds below. This vast panorama spanning the entire area is treasured as a symbol of the rich nature of Bihoro Town.

Bihoro Pass
The Grandeur and Beauty of Bihoro Pass
Bihoro Pass is located 525 meters above sea level. Standing at the top of the pass, you can take in breathtaking views spanning from Lake Kussharo, Japan’s largest caldera lake, to the active volcano Mt. Io (literally “Sulfur Mountain”), and the Shiretoko and Taisetsu mountains ranges that spread out below you. About 600,000 visitors come here every year.
Bihoro Museum
This museum is centered on the theme of Bihoro’s “River and People” and features exhibits on the nature and history of the area.
The displays show many of the local flora and fauna, topographical and geological features, folk customs, archeological specimens, and various stages of Bihoro’s development. Enjoy a wide range of exhibits, including photos, panels, taxidermy, and artifacts, then let the large diorama transport you into the midst of the local landscape.
