People, town, nature, shining central city of the Okhotsk
Kitami city is located in the eastern part of Hokkaido and is the central and largest city in the Okhotsk area with approximately 120,000 people living. It is also the largest in Hokkaido and its length is 110 kilometers from Daisetsuzan National Park-Sekihoku Pass to the Sea of Okhotsk. It is a kitchen of the Okhotsk area where rich food from the Sea and mountains gather. The difference of its temperature is 60 Celsius in a year between winter (-30 Celsius) and summer (30 Celsius), and this gives nature grow wealthy and rich food is produced. Its food culture, which is about using local food, such as “Kitami Yakiniku (Japanese style barbecue in Kitami)” and “Kitami Shio Yakisoba (stir-fried noodles with salt)” is rooted in people’s lives. You may notice a bond in Kitami city about views of fields colored with four seasons and local production for local consumption with people and this local area.

National Historic Site “Tokoro Site”
The Tokoro Site, which was designated as a national historic site, is a large scale of site from the mouth of Tokoro river through the Okhotsk Sea coast to the east coast of Saroma Lake. One of its characteristics is well preservation of its geography. There are a lot of remains of pit-houses that people made in this area and you may see them as holes in the ground. Also, Satsumon culture and Okhotsk culture, which were uniquely flourished in the past in Hokkaido, were found in this area. This was acknowledged that the Tokoro site is an important site to find out the relevance of the two cultures. Therefore, Tokoro Site has been protected as a national historic site.
