Major fall attractions in Hokkaido
Multiple Ways of Searching for Fall Colors

Hokkaido has many locations famous for its fall foliage, and just as many ways to enjoy it. Some fall colors can be seen from ropeways or gondolas, while others can be seen from above a bridge, or while soaking in an open-air hot spring bath. If you go up to "Ginsendai" on Mt. Taisetsu, where fall arrives the earliest in Japan, for example, take in the stunning contrast between dark green conifers, deciduous trees such as Japanese rowan, maples and bright red and gold colors of broad-leafed trees.

Indulge in the Autumn Harvest

If you wish to taste the fall delicacies of Hokkaido, Tokachi is the place to visit. Besides new potatoes and freshly made new buckwheat noodles, there are many sweets made with fresh milk. Everything is so delicious! While many relate agriculture and dairy farms to Tokachi, it is also close to the ocean and offers succulent blessings of the sea, such as salmon and shishamo smelt. So, dig in and eat to your heart's content.

Appreciate the Landscapes of Fall

When the time of harvest has arrived in Biei, the vivid summer colors of "patchwork hills" fade to shades of fall, and sunlight from the west washes over the picturesque landscape. One typical scene of fall that comes to mind, is that of the glasswort on Lake Notoro, Abashiri. The sight of crimson glasswort, blooming on the lake, is simply spectacular, and something you do not want to miss.

Wash Away Summer Fatigue in the Healing Waters of the Hot Springs

This year, Hokkaido experienced a much hotter summer than the previous year. When fall arrives, the body begins to show signs of fatigue. This means it is time to head to the hot springs, and soak in its healing waters. Hokkaido is home to numerous hot spring inns. There are inns and hotels with free-flowing natural spring water, open-air hot tubs or beautiful views, and some which boast delicious cuisine. This fall, enjoy a vacation that promises to heal and refresh both body and soul.
