Nearly every day in Sounkyo temperatures reaches below zero, freezing the streams, rivers, and surrounding waterfalls during the winter. The Hyoubaku Festival, a festival centered around the beauty of the frozen Ryusei and Ginga Waterfalls, is held from late January until March. During the festival, a host of ice sculptures fill the area and are lit up at night, making for colorful displays that visitors can explore. During the event, beautiful fireworks are frequently held, delighting visitors that stay until evening.
