Obihiro Shrine is dedicated to the guardian deity of relationships and commerce. The cute omikuji fortunes sold there are made to resemble the adorable Shima-enaga (also known as the Long-tailed tit) found around Hokkaido. Visitors frequently make the pilgrimage to this spot just for these cute little bird-shaped fortunes. The Shima-enaga is lovingly nicknamed “snow fairies” by the locals. The tiny white creatures can be seen flitting from tree branch to tree branch inside the shrine grounds anytime between autumn to spring.
