Asahikawa
Located in the center of Hokkaido, Asahikawa is the prefecture’s second-largest city. The city is home to the Asahiyama Zoo, one of Japan’s most popular zoos, and the Asahikawa City Museum, a great place to brush up on local history. Visitors to the region also come to enjoy the Furano-Biei area, which is loved for its abundance of natural wonders. Fields of gorgeous lavender bloom in the summer, and hills of white snow make the area ideal for skiing in winter. For hikers, nearby Mt. Asahidake provides plenty of opportunities to trek and backpack.
