Lake Shikotsu is a caldera lake formed by a volcanic eruption about 44,000 years ago. Located in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, this crystal-clear lake is one of the clearest in Japan. It’s so clear you can see right down to the “underwater Grand Canyon” created by past volcanic activity. As you float on the water in a clear-bottom kayak, enjoy amazing views of rippling rock formations below, as well as beautiful Fall colors from the nearby maple and ginkgo trees reflected on the lake’s surface.
