Introducing the Hokkai Heso Matsuri Bellybutton Festival, which is held annually on the 28th and 29th July,

Located right in the center of Hokkaido, Furano has come to be known affectionately as the “Bellybutton of Hokkaido”. In keeping with this theme, Furano’s Hokkai Heso Matsuri Bellybutton Festival, which is rather fittingly held right in the middle of the year on the 28th and 29th of July, is a fun-filled summer festival which celebrates all things bellybutton!

The main event is the “Heso Odori”, or “Bellybutton Dance”, in which participants paint fun and unique faces, known as “Zubara”, on their bellies. The bigger the belly the more fabulous the painting! To further emphasize the colorfully painted Zubara, dancers perform wearing large, conical straw hats, which conceal their own face from the neck upwards. The faces of the Zubara reveal a multitude of different expressions as dancers sway their bodies to the rhythm of the festival’s traditional folk tune.
