Held from July 28 to 29
This delightful summer festival centered around the celebration of belly buttons is held in Furano, lovingly called the “belly button of Hokkaido,” The main event, which is called the heso odori or the belly button dance, involves participants painting faces called zubara on their bellies before dancing around to traditional festival music. The bigger the belly of the participant, the better and bigger the face can be drawn. During the festival, there are heso odori costume sets available for purchase, which include a headpiece that covers the head in order to highlight the face drawn upon the participant’s torso. Brave visitors can purchase a set and take part in the festivities themselves.
