For far-reaching views of Mt. Hakodate and the surrounding landscape of lakes and forest-swarmed hills, head to the Kijihiki Highlands. Though it’s certainly located off the beaten track, you can take advantage of the local campgrounds and spend all day staring wistfully out at the spectacular scenery of the iconic mountain and the Tsugaru Strait in the distance. Best of all, there’s no light pollution in the highlands, so at night you can see the distant lights of squid-fishing boats under an expansive star-filled sky.
