Lake Akan has avoided disruptive development thanks to the area’s designation as a national park and the conservation efforts of the Maeda Ippoen Foundation. The resulting pristine conditions make it a fishing enthusiast’s paradise. The lake boasts many species of fish, including varieties native to Hokkaido. Seek out the coveted golden Japanese char, the elusive Sakhalin taimen, giant rainbow trout, and kokanee. A limited amount of tackle and a small number of waders are available to rent for a fee.
