Makkari Onsen, a hot spring in sight of the large stratovolcano Mt. Yotei, is a favorite relaxation stop for trekkers and hikers. From the steamy pools of geothermally heated water, bathers can look up at the cone-shaped mountain, which is Hokkaido’s answer to Mt. Fuji. Every season brings with it a new landscape to be enjoyed: the endless green of summer foliage, the powdery snow of winter, the color-shifting fall leaves, and the pink cherry blossoms of spring.
