Held from late March to the end of November
The Iomante Fire Festival is held at Lake Akan Ainu Theater Ikoro from March until the end of November every year. The festival is made up of dance performances that tell a story about kamuy (spirits of the Ainu people), people, and prayer. The Ainu, Hokkaido’s indigenous population, express their world view and myths through a performative narrative of music and light. Traditional Ainu dance performances have been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and selected by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
