Held from early February to mid-March
Akan has one of Hokkaido’s most well-loved winter festivals; a celebration of lights over the Lake Akan’s frozen surface. Even though the temperature drops to a frigid -20ºC, there are plenty of activities to keep visitors active and warm. Festival-goers can try their hands at building snowmen or making icy igloos. The festival also showcases a traditional Ainu ceremony, celebrating the indigenous people of Hokkaido.
