Flocking to Miyajima-numa: A Sanctuary for Migratory Waterfowl – HOKKAIDO LOVE!
dummy

The small size of the Miyajima-numa wetlands belies their incredible importance for a variety of wildlife. Most notably, almost 70,000 geese pass through this stretch of land and water in the Spring and Fall on their seasonal migration between southern Japan and Russia. The surrounding rice paddies are a vital source of food for these birds on their long journey, so be prepared to marvel at the flocks stopping for a quick bite! This sanctuary is a rare example of cultivated land benefitting an area’s natural wildlife. Come by for a visit from mid to late April or late September to early October!
