Goryokaku Tower overlooks Goryokaku Fort, the historical site of Japan’s first Western-style fort. The star-shaped Goryokaku remains can be seen from the tower’s 90-meter-high observation deck, alongside the surrounding seasonal scenery, like cherry blossoms in the Spring, Summer greenery, Autumn foliage, and the silent snow scenes of Winter. Exhibits about the Battle of Hakodate are located around the site and lend a fuller appreciation of the history. The tower also affords stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the Hakodate streetscapes, Mount Hakodate, the Tsugaru Strait, and Hakodate Bay.
