Anime and manga, referring to cartoons and comics, are indelible components of Japan’s eccentric pop culture world. For two days in summer the normally quiet streets of Lake Toya Onsen, a hot spring town in south-central Hokkaido, teem with avid fans of these two artistic mediums, sporting incredible cosplay outfits from their favorite titles, from One Piece and Dragon Ball Z to Tokyo Ghoul and Demon Slayer. Unlike most pop culture conventions, which take place in huge indoor exhibition spaces, at the Toyako Manga & Anime Festa, party-goers walk through the crowded streets dressed as their favorite iconic characters. If you ask politely, people might even let you take a photo with them. (But please do make sure to ask!) If you plan on taking part in the cosplay festivities yourself, why not take the shuttle bus to the other side of the lake and get your picture taken at Kameiwa Zero Point? Get a photo taken in your cosplay standing on top of the water!
