Kushiro & Lake Akan
A wide variety of plant-life and wild animals inhabit Kushiro Marsh which, at 183 square meters, is the largest marshland in Japan. The area is also notable for its exceptionally large colony of Red-crowned cranes, which are highly symbolic of Japan. An area of great natural beauty, many visitors choose to explore the marsh by foot, or by canoe. Set amidst stunning natural scenery, visitors to the nearby Lake Akan area can learn about the Marimo, the mysterious green moss balls which inhabit the lake or visit the Lake Akan Ainu Kotan to experience the culture of the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido. The hot springs at Lake Akan’s onsen town are also not to be missed! Both Kushiro Marsh and Lake Akan are easily accessible from Tancho Kushiro Airport.
