Kitami in eastern Hokkaido is teeming with yakiniku (grilled meat, usually beef) restaurants, and has come to be known as the “City of Yakiniku”. Kitami-style yakiniku features beef tenderloin and pork entrails barbecued on a shichirin grill (a small charcoal grill). The popular Mid-Winter Barbecue Festival, where people enjoy yakiniku in the frigid outdoors, is held in early February at night when temperatures regularly drop to around -10 degrees. It’s worth braving the cold, as you can always warm up with sizzling meat while sat under the numerous space heaters.
