Designated as a Natural Monument of Hokkaido, the limestone caves inside Nakatonbetsu Limestone Nature Park are unique in Japan due to their special formation process. This geological marvel came to be through thegradual accumulation of crustaceans and shellfish, such as barnacles and   scallops.  Be sure to bring a flashlight, so you can travel through the first cave, which is currently open, and see a variety of geological formations on the cave’s walls and ceiling caused by water erosion. And to top it off, \the entire park is free for visitors to tour!
