Yunokawa Onsen, a hot spring town located in the outskirts of Hakodate, is one of the top hot spring areas in Hokkaido. Local tourist haunts like Mt. Hakodate and Hakodate City are only a short drive away, so many visitors use this as their base of operations when touring the area. There is a wide variety of lodgings in the hot spring area from old-fashioned Japanese ryokan (traditional inns) to modern hotels, each with amazing views overlooking the Tsugaru Straight which separates Hokkaido from Honshu, Japan’s main island. The famed lights of squid fishing boats can be seen from the open-air baths and guest rooms during the summer and autumn.
