Held in early February

The Asahikawa Winter Festival, which takes place over the course of one week in February, attracts more than one million visitors who flock to see the city wrapped in beautiful colors each year. Prior to the event, snow is collected from around the city and transported to the wide riverbed of the Ishikari River. From there, it is transformed into some of the world’s largest snow statues. Color projection mapping and fireworks can be seen every night throughout the festival. This year, the famous festival’s format is adjusted slightly due to the ongoing coronavirus situation. The main venue has been changed from the Riverside of the Asahikawa Bridge to the area around Asahikawa Station and Kaimono Kouen Shopping Street. Furthermore, hygiene regulations include a “walk-through” format and festival sites being spread out to avoid congestion, as well as the usage of ICT throughout the event.
