dummy

Held on the fourth Friday and Saturday of August

The Yohtaka Andon Festival in Numata is one of Hokkaido’s three big andon (paper lantern) festivals every summer. The beautiful and towering andon are paraded through the city streets, lighting up the summer evenings with festive excitement. The climax of the festival is a battle-royale of lanterns. Five of the gigantic andon duke it out in the streets, colliding with each other until all are destroyed. It is thought that the destruction of these lanterns drives away evil spirits, allowing good fortune in.
