Witness the Power of Hokkaido’s Great Outdoors in This Extrodinary EventWhich Features Beautiful Ice Art Forged by Nature itself!

This popular winter event takes its name from Sounkyo’s most well-known waterfalls, known as the “Meteor Falls” and “Galaxy Falls”, which turn to ice during the winter months when the temperature seldom rises above freezing. Ice sculptures naturally forged in the valley by the harsh cold of Sonykyo’s winter are brilliantly illuminated at night, creating a mystical atmosphere, entirely different to that which can be experienced during the daytime. The venue is bathed in a romantic mood, topped off by a spectacular firework display which beautifully colors the clear winter night sky.

A Mysterious Village Which Only Appears in the Depths of Winter! A BeautifulWinter Wonderland which is Sure to Amaze!

It is only in the winter months that the icy world of Shikaribetsu Kotan can be found, floating upon the surface of frozen Lake Shikaribetsu which, at 810 meters above sea level, is positioned at the highest altitude in Hokkaido. Enjoy the ice bar which is constructed entirely from ice, or enjoy the wonderful winter scenery as you relax in the open air ice bath; be sure to explore this wonderful ice village before it melts!

Otaru Snow Light Path

See the Streets of Otaru Lit by Candlelight in this Wonderful Ode to Winter!

Otaru Snow Light Path is a winter event in which the port town of Otaru is decorated with countless snow candles. See Otaru Canal and the former National Railway Temiya Line illuminated by glistening balls of light. The canal in particular, lit up by candles floating upon the surface of the water makes for a great photo opportunity!

The frozen surface of Lake Akan becomes stage to a variety of events during this event which perfectly embodies Hokkaido’s winter season. The night sky above the frozen Lake Akan takes on a romantic glow as it is lit up by the blooming of beautiful flower-like fireworks. Both adults and children alike will be charmed by the fun activities on offer, such as ice carving and snow sculpting! Also, it is only here that you can witness the ceremonies of the Ainu people, who have long since shaped the history of Lake Akan.

Countless gleaming objects are woven together with the night sky and the falling snow through light and sound in one of Tokachi Onsen’s most highly anticipated events. Various large and small conical objects, crafted from heat insulating material commonly used in agriculture, feature colourful LED lights which change in time with the rhythm of the music. Shiretoko Drift Ice Festival

In winter, the snow-blanketed Shiretoko Campsite becomes stage to a multitude of hands-on events and activities, such as an ice-bar where you can purchase special cocktails, a bonfire corner and hammocks where you can relax and gaze at the night sky.

Asahikawa Winter Festival

Be Captivated by the World’s Greatest Display of Giant Snow Sculptures!

The “Asahikawa Winter Festival”, which takes place for one week in February every year, attracts more than 1 million visitors from Japan and abroad who flock to see Asahikawa city wrapped in beautiful colours. Prior to the event, snow is gathered from around the city and transported to the wide riverbed of the Ishikari River, where it is transformed into the world’s largest snow statue! Projection mapping and firework displays can be seen every night throughout the week.
