Autumn Foliage Spots

1. Sounkyo Gorge

In the Sounkyo Gorge where visitors can enjoy Japan’s earliest autumn foliage, a hot spring district is located at the foot of Mt. Kurodake allowing them to also delight in the beautiful gorge scenery as it is transformed by the arrival of each new season.
In this gorge formed by a column-shaped precipice called the Chujo-setsuri (Columnar joint), there are many good places to view autumn foliage. At the gorge’s best-known spot, the two “husband-wife” waterfalls, the Ryusei-no-taki (Shooting-star falls)” and the “Ginga no taki (Milky-way Falls)”, the beautiful contrast of the colored trees with the two waterfalls as they fall on the left and right sides of the precipice and Fudo Iwa is an overwhelming sight. We urge you to use the ropeway to go to the top of the mountain to enjoy the view of the gorge and autumn foliage scenery spread out below. At the peak of the fall-color season, the beauty of the carpet of brilliant colors spread out before your eyes will take your breath away.
