1 Lake Toyoni   Viewing the scenery from a helicopter (limited period),

recommended season: Autumn

See a heart drawn by natural forces.

One of Hokkaido’s many outstandingly beautiful lakes, this heart-shaped lake nestled in an old-growth forest is a place of scenic beauty only known to a few, but a sight you must enjoy at least once. A lake naturally shaped like a heart, its scenery is transformed by every change of the season. It known as Lake Toyoni in Erimo Town.
Unfortunately, visitors cannot see the heart shape of this lake from its shoreline, but can enjoy it from a sightseeing helicopter in service during a limited period of the year. Seen from the sky, this lake forms a heart so perfect that it is difficult to imagine that it was formed by the force of nature. A truly romantic image. We recommend that you visit in October, when the virgin forest cloaked in its autumn colors contrasts strikingly with the reflection of the sky on the surface of the lake! Riding this helicopter, you can take aerial photographs of heart-shaped Lake Toyoni enclosed by vivid autumn foliage. And later you can share the pictures with your friends.

4 Soya Hills, White Road

Recommended season: Summer

Pure white road continuing to the sea

The Soya hills are part of a hilly region in North-eastern Wakkanai City.
On the Soya Hills with Japan’s northernmost point, Cape Soya, in the background, visitors enjoy a uniquely alluring beauty spot formed by their gentle slopes. As they walk in the hills, they occasionally catch glimpses of Rishirifuji or Japan’s largest wind farm. They gaze in wonder at the beautiful contrast created by the greenery of the hills, blue sky and white clouds, and the white windmills. The splendid scenic spot in the Soya Hills district that everyone must see at least once in their lifetime is the White Road that leads directly towards the blue ocean waters. There are many other spots which I believe everyone has to see at least once.
It is actually a road covered with the shells of the Yesso scallop that is a famous product of Wakkanai. The shells discarded by production plants were cleaned and placed on the road surface to create a road of white shells. This road has become part of the local landscape through the recycling of shells. An event that can only be described as a “miracle”.
