Abashiri Prison Museum: Learn About Prison Life on the Inside – HOKKAIDO LOVE!
dummy

Housed within the former prison complex of the same name, the Abashiri Prison Museum offers a unique glimpse into Japanese prison life, past and present. While at Abashiri, explore the fan-shaped wooden buildings originally built by the prisoners who were incarcerated there during the Meiji Period (1868-1912). This museum gives you the rare chance to learn about the harsh reality of prisons past, such as how prisoners were forced to build the roads that were a key part of Hokkaido’s development. As you fast forward back to the present, sample the food served to modern prisoners in the museum’s restaurant. Non-Japanese speakers are also in luck; foreign language interpretation is available through graphic panels and touch screens.
