Traditional Ainu Embroidery Lessons

Take part in an Ainu cultural practice

Sacred patterns are an important part of the culture and spirituality of the indigenous Ainu people. Ainu people learn to draw these patterns from a young age and use them in traditional crafts such as wood carvings and embroidery. In this lesson you’ll learn how to embroider a matanpus, a headband worn by Ainu people. You’ll leave with a souvenir of your time in Hokkaido and the cultural exchange you have taken part in.
