Akanko Onsen

Ainu Culture on Display

Akan-Mashu National Park is an East Hokkaido treasure trove of gorgeous natural areas centered around the three caldera lakes of Akan, Kussharo and Mashu. Lake Akan is well-known for “marimo,” strange algae balls that form in the lake and have been adopted as mascot characters. The nearby Akanko Onsen area offers visitors an opportunity to experience the Ainu culture at Akanko Ainu Kotan, a reproduction of an Ainu village where the Ainu people put on traditional performances and traditional handmade crafts.
