A glimpse into a turning point in Japanese history
This fort was originally built in 1856 to protect Hokkaido from foreign invasion. When the fort was in operation, 150 to 200 samurai warriors would have guarded the 6 gates that barred entry to the grounds. Today, you’ll find a museum designed to replicate a traditional samurai residence showing a variety of artifacts and art from that historic period.
