The Sounkyo area is famous for having the earliest autumn foliage in Japan. The Ginsendai viewing spot in particular attracts countless visitors each year for its breathtaking colors. To reach this scenic area, follow the Taisetsu Sightseeing Road until you reach the Mount Akadake Trailhead. The painting-like scenery and the subtle changes in overlapping colors, from the greens to golds with sprinklings of red, are sure to move you. Travel by car is restricted from September to reduce congestion, but shuttle buses to the area are available.
