OVERVIEW

Shakotan Peninsula is Hokkaido’s only marine park.

Known by locals as “Shakotan Blue”, the clear cobalt blue sea has been named as a Hokkaido Heritage Site. Below the water’s surface is an abundance of seaweed distinct to northern regions, making this an area of immense biological significance. This tour is an experience for all five senses— you’ll see the area’s marine marvels up close on a sea kayaking and snorkeling trip, followed by a delicious barbecue lunch with local seafood. You’ll finish your tour with a hike up a cliff, where you’ll be rewarded by a 270-degree panorama of the horizon. These memories will last a lifetime.

ITINERARY

Shakotan Peninsula

Starting point for sea kayaking tour. This tour is a 90-minute trip (about 3km) that starts on the sandy beach in front of the terrace and takes you along the quay and back. After returning to the terrace area, we’ll go snorkeling for about 30 minutes around Benten-jima, an island located opposite the terrace. Surrounded by extremely clear water, you’ll see the sea in a whole new way, with an up-close view of the marine life that lives there.

Sakazuki Terrace

After our marine adventures, we’ll shower and change clothes before having a seafood barbecue on the beach in front of the terrace at around 1:30pm. You’ll enjoy a variety of delicious seafood caught mainly in Shakotan, including squid dried overnight, scallops, atka mackerel, cherry salmon collar and more! If the weather is rough, we’ll hold the barbecue on the terrace, where you can enjoy an outstanding view of the sea.

LUNCH

  • Try shelling scallops
  • Enjoy seafood mainly caught locally, including squid dried overnight, scallops, sliced atka mackerel and cherry salmon collar
