OVERVIEW

Located in central Hokkaido, Lake Shikaribetsu is the only natural lake in Japan’s largest national park “Daisetsuzan National Park”. Its unique landscape became a habitat for many national protected species, like Salvelinus Malma and Pika, or Rock Rabbits. In order to protect the habitat of these species, the Shikaribetsu Nature Center located right in front of Lake Shikaribetsu have been working and living with the lake for over 30 years.

In this tour, after enjoying lunch made with locally produced ingredients, you will have a choice of either kayaking the lake or taking a dip in the mother river of Lake Shikaribetsu, the Bibi River, and learn about the unique environment inside the waters using a water glass. Both activities will be guided by a professional guide from the Shikaribetsu Nature Center.

ITINERARY

07:30AM

Meet your English Speaking Guide at Sapporo Station. We will board a JR train and head to Shinto Station. The ride is approximately 2 hours.

11:00AM

We will enjoy an early lunch before starting the activities for the day.

12:30PM

After we finish lunch, we will break into 2 groups. Group A will be Kayaking and Hiking while Group B will be taking a dip into the river of Yanbetsu and go on a journey to see and learn the living species in the lake.

<Group A>

With a professional kayak guide, we will kayak Lake Shikaribetsu. Once we arrive on the other side of the lake, we will hike in the woods and head to Lake Shinonome. Lake Shinonome is a lake you can only visit by hiking or kayak. While we enjoy the activities, the guide will talk to us about the primeval forest and interesting species that live around the area.

<Group B>

We will put on waders and take a dip into the Yanbetsu River. As the mother river of Lake Shikaribetsu, Yanbetsu River is a house for many living species, for example Miyabe Charr and rainbow trout. If lucky, we may see some birds like white-tailed eagle.

18:30PM

We will return back to Sapporo Station around this time.

LUNCH

You will enjoy an early lunch at a local restaurant with a view of Lake Shikaribetsu. Lunch will be a set menu using local ingredients from around the area.

This restaurant uses local ingredients for their menus to support the local farms.
